With Memorial Day being the kickoff to the start of summer we know everyone is eager to get out on the water. However, if you plan on hitting the water this Memorial Day, we would like to remind you to stay safe out there by providing you with some safety tips.
Safety Tip #1 | PFD/Life Jackets
Always wear a US Coast Guard approved life jacket that fits properly for the intended wearer. Be sure to have them readily accessible. Children 12 and under must always wear a PFD while the boat is underway.
Safety Tip #2 | Designated driver
Alcohol can be deadly. Be sure to designate a boat operator before hitting the water this weekend. Kentucky law states that a person is considered intoxicated if the concentration of alcohol in your body is 0.08%. If convicted, you can be subject to hefty fines or even face jail time. Be smart out there don’t drink and operate.
Safety Tip #3 | Updated boater registrations
Every boat must properly display their registration number and registration decal.
Safety Tip #4 | Fire Extinguisher
To help prevent a fire it’s best practice to turn your blower on for 10 seconds to release all fumes in your engine compartment. Make sure all ventilation systems are working properly. You are required to have a fire extinguisher on-board your vessel.
Safety Tips #5 | Safe speed
Be courteous of other vessels out on the waterways and avoid collisions by keeping a safe speed. There are rules that every operator must follow when meeting other boats. Take action and review your give way vessel and stand on vessel terms.
